Questions asked about the Enhanced 911 Addressing program. 1. WHAT IS ENHANCED 911ANYWAY: To put it simply enhanced 911 is a state of the art computer aided emergency dispatch and emergency when they receive a 911 call for assistance. 2. WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE MY ADDRESS CHANGED, EVERYONE AT THE FIRE AND RESCUE SQUAD KNOWS WHERE I LIVE: In short the 911 center requires a physical address in order to tell emergency response agency personnel where you live in times of emergency. SIMPLY YOU DO NOT LIVE IN YOUR MAIL BOX. SITUATION: Let’s say that you are having chest pains with shortness of breath and against your better judgment you listen to a loved ones advice and dial 911, while the dispatcher getting information from you, you collapse and become unresponsive before you can provide directions to your home. At this point the only information that the dispatcher has about you on their computer screen is your phone number and you live at a RR ? Box 185 – AA7, Keyser. Now herein lays a major problem for the dispatcher, the emergency response agency personnel and you “the caller”. Minutes are ticking away and they have to (working together) do the best that they can do to find you in a timely manner and the clock keeps ticking. There is a big difference as to where your mail box is located and where your home is physically located. Putting it bluntly, your chances of survival are getting slimmer as the clock ticks away, by the way did I mention that it is 6:30 in the morning and members of the rescue squad that know where you live are on their way to work and unaware of your need for assistance (911 does not send emergency personnel to a mail box). 3. WHO WILL NOTIFY ME OF MY ADDRESS CHANGE: It will be your responsibility to notify all of your various credit card, bank and insurance companies, etc, along with family and friends. The county addressing office will notify the Phone Company, United States Postal Service, and local governmental agencies as to your new address. 4. SOMEONE HAS BEEN CALLING ME OR THEY HAVE LEFT CARDS AM MY DOOR WANTING TO KNOW THE NAME OF THE ROAD I LIVE ON: Simply call the Addressing and Mapping Coordinator at 304-788-4111 and tell him why you are calling or you may e-mail him (mcaddressing@gmail.com) your question, he would appreciate hearing from you and enjoy the opportunity to speak with you. 5. I JUST RENEWED MY DRIVERS LICENSE - NOW WHAT: By the way it will not cost you dime to change your mailing address with the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles all you have to do is provide all of the documents that they require, however if you request a new drivers license with your new address on it then there will be a fee for that. Remember to change your address with the DMV or you will not receive your next license renewal form if you don’t, it will not be forwarded to your new address, that’s the law. 6. WHY CHANGE TO A CITY STYLE ADDRESS: A city style address gives emergency responders more information to work with. Each home and business receives an address no matter where they receive their mail. These addresses are logical and permanent and do not change when or if a resident or postal service move’s a mail box. Addresses are assigned from a given starting point with odd numbers on the left and even numbers on the right with addresses increasing as you travel away from the starting point. 7. SO I'VE CHANGED MY ADDRESS - NOW WHAT: After the completion of assigning a new address to all residential and business structures outside of municipal boundaries each residence or business will be notified of their address change from their current (OLD) to new address (city style). This notification will be on letterhead from either the US Postal Service and/or the Mineral County Addressing Office. This notice will contain instructions as to when your new address takes affect and how to display your new address on your home and mail box, yes I said your home, what good is a physical address if you don’t display it on your home. DO NOT THROW THIS DOCUMENT AWAY YOU WILL NEED IT TO VERIFY YOUR ADDRESS CHANGE AT THE West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles |
